Assistive Technology (AT) is defined as any piece of equipment, program, or system, whether commercially available, modified, or custom built, that is used to maintain or increase the functional capabilities of a person with a disability. Assistive technology can be as high tech as a Voice-activated Computer, or as simple and low-tech as Velcro.
The Assistive Technology program at Ability Connection Texas offers many individualized services to children and adults of all ages with all types of disabilities:
- Assistive Technology Assessments
- Individual and Group Training
- Lab Use
- Device Acquisition
- Technical Support
- Equipment Loan
- Free Assistive Technology Demonstrations
Our assistive technology program is also an approved provider for training through the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS).
In order to promote awareness of assistive technology, ACT provides FREE assistive technology demonstrations to anyone interested (individuals with or without disabilities). Our state-of-the-art assistive technology lab is one of six demonstration sites in Texas for the Texas Technology Access Project. To learn more about assistive technology or to schedule an individual or group demonstration, contact our AT staff.
At Ability Connection Texas, we serve individuals with all types of disabilities. As part of our assistive technology program, we have a special initiative this year in which we are reaching out to disabled veterans. Our goal is to work with veterans, veteran groups and veteran service professionals to pair individuals with technology that will increase independence and help individuals return to work.
